Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare

The grand daddy of survival horror returns to see if it can reclaim the crown.

After a long hiatus, the series that inspired Resident Evil is back with a new look. Alone in the Dark doesn?t reclaim its survival/horror crown, but it does shine a pretty light on the genre.

In fact, The New Nightmare sports the best lighting effects you?ll ever see on the Dreamcast. The overall graphic quality is topnotch with sharp prerendered environments and good-looking characters.

The original Alone in the Dark didn?t have much of a story, but the New Nightmare is packed to the gills with dialogue and written clues. A younger, hipper Edward Carnby along with able-bodied Aline Cedrac embark on a trail of murder and an ancient evil that is threatening to re-appear. Although the story isn?t highly original, it does have enough interesting details to keep you entertained and motivated to see things through.

Even the sounds hold your interest. The voice-acting is well done for the most part, keeping the B-movie feel that all survival horror games seem driven to imitate. The music is suitably subdued and eerie with some loud surprises thrown in for good measure. The controls are the game?s weakest feature; even with auto aim, it?s very tough to hit enemies consistently. There are also some collision detection problems that can lead to frustrating deaths. Despite these flaws, The New Nightmare is still a great title to add to your Dreamcast library, especially for survival/horror fans.
