X-Men: Mutant Academy 2

The X-Men are back and more mediocre than ever in Mutant Academy 2 for the PlayStation.

Much like a reckless Hollywood studio capitalizing on a summer-movie franchise, Activision is releasing a sub-par sequel to its superhero fighting game, X-Men Mutant Academy 2.

Mutant Academy 2 suffers from all the same problems that the first game did, and it also lacks any real innovation or worthwhile additions (besides a few new characters and fighting arenas). The A.I. in this 2D fighter is still annoyingly single-minded? it either corner-traps or repeatedly flings projectiles. Character balance is still awful, cheap characters are still cheap, and aggravating characters are even more so the second time around.

The controls are still the most frustrating part of the game: They?re sloppy, inexact, and derivative of Street Fighter's with a dash of Tekken's thrown in. The counter move is more difficult in the sequel (two buttons instead of one), but it?s still too easy to pull off.

Graphics and sound are identical to the original's?better-than-average 3D character and level visuals, but lackluster and irritating voices and sound effects. There isn?t enough new material added, however, in either of these categories.

The best part of this game?and the last one?is all of the extras you can unlock, including new costumes, movie art, and cool secret characters. It?s too bad the gameplay is too tedious to make it worth the effort. Let?s hope the second X-Men movie isn?t this unoriginal of a sequel.
