Gruesome Gridiron Greatness
If you don't know Blitz, the Blitz 2000 may just be the ticket for you. You play a type of wrestling-match-meets-the-NFL football game where your goal is not so much to strategize about your game play as much as it is to remove players from their spines as painfully as possible. Although the roster of plays are limited, you can still have an enjoyable time bashing your most hated team with super speedy blitzing action and bone-crushing tackles.

The graphics in this version are somewhat of an improvement over last years game. Bigger players, better tackle animations, and a few mode changes (like On Fire and Blitz Passing) enhance the game further, but the graphics look much less detailed around the edges than the original Blitz did. Players look softer and fuzzier, and there's some slowdown (especially when the On Fire mode takes effect).

The sound is just as tame and barely noticeable as it is in the PlayStation and Dreamcast versions. You hear the same voice-overs early on, and the crowd sound is one long, droning buzz. Bring your own tunes and phase B2000's out. Players may find the Nintendo 64 controller's analog stick a bit tricky, especially for precise throwing assignments. The Blitz Passing mode helps, but the controls still feel looser than most football games.

Thoughtless Fun
The game's new joy now lies in developing your own plays and seeing if they work or not. To that end, Blitz 2000 has a great play editor, and a cool practice mode that clearly defines what routes your receivers/ball carriers are running. If you couldn't beat a friend because of their superior knowledge of Blitz before, you now have no excuses for learning.

Still, if what you want is a break from option-heavy football games where you have to think about everything from the managers shoe size to the cheerleader salaries, then step into the fast and extremely simple world of NFL Blitz 2000. It's just the kind of game for people that thought NBA Hangtime, Open Ice, and WWF Arcade were as real as they need in a sports game.
