Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2

Ubisoft continues to crank out new additions to the Ghost Recon series, and this time, they've taken full advantage of the PS3's capabilities. Combining a balanced mix of strategy and action, GRAW 2 is an intense game that keeps the pressure on from beginning to end.

Roll Out, Team

It's 2014 and the US government has decided to intervene in the civil war that has broken out in Mexico. As Army Captain Scott Mitchell, it's your job to carry out missions on both sides of the border as you lead an elite team of soldiers, which is quite possibly the most enjoyable aspect of the game. It takes a while to adjust to controlling yourself and others, but if you manage your team well enough, you can reach the point of not having to fire your own weapons. Along with a cache of weapons and a unit of soldiers at your command, you'll get to use the UAV; an un-manned aircraft that can be used for recon, while the MULE delivers equipment when you're in need and can even be used for cover when in a pinch.

Each of the different terrain you encounter presents its own challenges, and the missions are as diverse as the landscapes including action packed battles, military espionage and stealthy rescue missions. But as good as this game looks, there are a few things that take away from the overall experience. The AI is not very bright, and taking out your enemies is easy once you engage them, so getting into position can sometimes be the meat of a firefight. The controls can also be a little maddening as there are many options to take advantage of, and it's easy to get confused in the heat battle, finding yourself crawling when you want to run or standing down when it's time to attack. Furthermore, while Campaign Mode is a good time, it's much too short.

Despite these issues game, the individual missions are a lot of fun. GRAW 2's graphics look great and the detailed terrain invites you to be creative with your strategies. Wilderness and enemy camps are loaded with places to hide and trails to sneak throughto catch your enemy by surprise. Action sequences can get a little confusing, but that adds to the intensity of the fighting, though in fact, it isn't always clear what you are supposed to be doing as the leader. A gamer that needs strict direction might get frustrated, but people who like to experiment with a game's freedom will get a kick out of this.

If you're interest is with multiplayer, GRAW 2 has plenty of options that actually outweighs single-player. Graphics look just as good and there are additional maps and missions in co-op or competitive modes. Overall, if you liked the first GRAW, you can look forward to more excellent military shooter action, with excellent multiplayer features.

PROS: Controlling multiple soldiers, intense action, strategically challenging, excellent multiplayer.
CONS: Dumb AI, confusing controls, single-player campaign too short.
