Years ago, I became enamored with Logitech's MouseMan, an ergonomic three-button mouse whose precision helped boost my Quake scores.

Shortly after I started recommending it to my pals, Logitech moved to mice with wheels, and the MouseMan design I fancied was relegated to a "notebook mouse" status--same design, but with a cord too short to work with a desktop PC.

Now Logitech has pulled the old MouseMan design out of the closet and added some nifty new capabilities. Renamed the WingMan Gaming Mouse and recolored a hip dark gray, the mouse fits in my hand naturally and comfortably, with finger-fitting grooves on the buttons and a pleasing indentation for the thumb.

The mouse's support for the Universal Serial Bus (USB) means easy installation and even more precision. The report rate--how often the mouse reports its position--for serial and PS/2 mice is 40 times per second. The MouseMan connected via the USB port reports at 120 times per second. And an included adapter and software allow you to connect the mouse via the PS/2 port and boost the report rate as high as 200 times per second.

The result is smooth, clean, responsive movement and aiming in first-person shooters, and slick, responsive control in all Windows 98 applications. About the only downside to this mouse is that, with its left-to-right downward slope, it is clearly designed for right-handed mousers only.

If you're right-handed and demand a high-performance mouse, you won't find anything better than Logitech's WingMan. Its slick design, its precision in both USB and PS/2 modes make it a great value at $39.99--and it comes bundled with the full version of Monolith's Shogo: Mobile Armor Division.
