STRATEGY
Perhaps the biggest change that goes along with the increase in scale is the new importance that has been placed on units that were often found to be practically worthless in other games-- items such as reconnaissance or jamming units. In previous games, maps were often too small to make adequate use of these dedicated units, but in Supreme Commander where armies will need to travel vast distances, they become a necessity to prevent new and highly dangerous strategic moves. Neglect to scout your flanks and your army may result in attack by a vast pincer movement. Forget to bring along some radar jammers--or even worse, some capable anti-aircraft defenses--and you'll find your armored columns ripped to shreds in no time.
Players will likewise find a focus on air power that has been much improved from the traditional RTS model.. Each side has a variety of important aircraft--the standard scouts, interceptors, level bombers, and transports, eventually progressing to more sophisticated gun ships, torpedo bombers, and high-altitude strategic bombers. But what makes the difference in Supreme Commander are the additional options available to the player.
The third and final branch of destruction in Supreme Commander is the navy. All the expected units are there including battleships, aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and submarines, along with a few others. Naval combat is a sight to see due to the scale of units, but even the smallest vessels maintain their importance throughout the game. Escort vessels in particular cannot be neglected, as they are of great use for scouting and picket-line defense.
SUMMARY
What comes together in the end is a game that promises to revolutionize the real-time strategy genre. The new strategic scope and ease at which combined arms tactics can be put together has made Supreme Commander a game that truly lives up to the hype that has been heaped upon it. And for eager fans, there isn't much time left to wait.
