S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (Page 2 of 3)

The game takes place in an alternate reality, where a second explosion occurs in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. Lighting, earthquakes, and other strange phenomena occur in the sarcophagus. Scientists investigating these occurrences and an anomalous energy at the sarcophagus disappear and the government has no choice but to close down the Zone.

Mutated animals emerge, tearing cattle and humans to shreds. The only one with the titanium guts to enter this nuclear nightmare loaded with mutants, radioactive poison, and hazardous anomalous energy is you, a Stalker whose job it is to risk his life in order to obtain various objects in these dangerous areas and make it out alive.

During the visually stunning intro to the game, a bolt of lightning rips your truck in half, sending you flying through the air. You awake, equipped with nothing other than a pistol, and your mission to acquire as many artifacts as you can in the Zone, which have absorbed this anomalous energy.

A Role-Player's FPS

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl truly is an open-ended game, and depending on your actions during the 40+ hours it takes to complete, you can earn one of seven different endings, two of which are "true" endings. But as much freedom as you have in the game to do as you please, you won't be able to get through the game by only firing bullets at everything in sight. You must embrace the role-playing features of the game.

One of the more notable RPG elements is the character interaction system. By having conversations with scientists, military personnel, other Stalkers, and dealers you determine who your allies and enemies are. You are also able to trade everything in your item inventory by talking, such as weapons, artifacts, and equipment. Once a character interaction has begun, you are able to select from a number of questions and responses, much like you would do in a traditional RPG.

Guns and Ammo

Where the rest of the game has a distinct science fiction quality, the weaponry in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is strictly traditional. But the realistic guns you wield fit the mood of the game, which does a good job of not drifting into cheesy creature-feature territory. Several types of pistols can be acquired such as the Beretta 92FS and the FN HP-SA high-powered pistol. Other weapons that can be used are the AK-74 assault rifle, a double-barreled shotgun, a hunting knife, a revolving grenade launcher, and more. The coolest feature of the weapons system in the game is that most guns are customizable. You'll be able to attach silencers, laser sights, and other upgrades you obtain throughout the game.
