Metal Slug Anthology

Giving a New Meaning To 2-D Dual-Wielding

Gamers might question why port an old-school classic anthology collection when the Wii has the capability to emulate those same games for a fraction of the retail price. The answer is simple -controller options.

While the Wii is graphically superior to its past Nintendo progenitors, the console also sports the ability for near limitless controller configurations, and MS Anthology take's full advantage of the Wii's unique interface abilities to provide an extraordinary gaming experience. Why play any of the Metal Slug games with the traditional home console analog controller configurations when you can tilt the Wii remote on its side and use it like the traditional NES controller of yesteryear. Are you still hungering to spice up your Metal Slug gameplay? Why not select the tilt function which enables you to move your character onscreen by tilting the controller on its axis.

While the old-school controller configurations are the simplest throwback forms of the primordial 8-bit console days, the best controller configurations are the dual Wii remote and Nunchuk configuration, and there are three various controller setups to choose from. One aspect that will remain constant throughout all the dual Wii remote and Nunchuk controller configurations is the ability to throw grenades by flicking the controller forward. In addition to the 5 Wii controller configurations, gamers will also have the option to play MS Anthology with the GameCube controller.

It's Like a Neo Geo in Your Wii

Our gameplay time yielded surprising results. While I've always had a penchant for side-scrolling homicidal orgies of death and destruction, Metal Slug felt like an entirely new game with the unique controls and gameplay additions. The mindless boss strategies of use grenade, die, continue, use grenade, die, continue are replaced by actual stratagem. You have to think of who to play effectively during a given level. Trading power-ups also yields better teamwork and enforces the unspoken 2-player code of honor in shooter.

While the MS Anthology sports 6 various controller configurations, we found that the easiest for all gamers is the tilted Wii remote configuration (dubbed NES by us). This configuration yielded the simplest controls and was familiar and easiest for everybody to pick up.

Another favorite control scheme was the Wii remote and Nunchuk arcade configuration, which allows you to move by waving the remote while the Nunchuk housed all the actual command buttons. This seemed the most familiar to gamers who prefer a mouse and keyboards. The verdict is still out until the Wii launches, but for what it's worth; Metal Slug Anthology delivers the ultimate Metal Slug side-scrolling shooter experience and seems to incorporate the new Wii controller configurations flawlessly. Look for Metal Slug Anthology to be released during Wii's launch week.
