Environmental hotspots are painful, but drain you stamina quickly

This year, Smackdown! vs. RAW takes you out of the ring and into the bleachers for some one-on-one time with the fans. Environmental hotspots are spread throughout the playing field and allow you to perform specific environmental attacks, such as choking your opponent with electrical wire, smashing their face into computer monitors (amidst a blizzard of sparks), and thrashing your opponent with the requisite chairs and tables.

And if you're not into fighting dirty, you can always rip up nearby signs and banners. How you like dem apples?

All of SvR 2006's game modes return this year, but with some welcome improvements. Season mode now gives players a personal computer through which you will receive personal email, complete with cheesy voice-overs from real WWE stars. The theatrics are overblown, to be sure, but fanatics are sure to love every overheated line of authentic dialogue.

The game offers an even more intimate look at life beyond the locker rooms. General Manager mode has seen an interface overhaul, with the ability to choose different script writers that specialize in various dramatic scenarios. Also new to GM mode are the concepts of "Velocity" and "Heat," which give superstars a chance to boost their popularity before a big match.

The biggest change of all, though, is the Create-A-Superstar mode, which kept us busy for hours on end. We spent a whole hour just focusing on creating a lifelike reproduction of old pointy-tailed Lucifer; once we were satisfied with his sinister appearance, we spent another hour picking out his moves. The creation options are so in-depth and modifiable that playtesters are already creating Simpsons and South Park characters. We were so exhausted by creating our satanic superstar that we bailed out of the Entrance development mode, which lets you hand tweak your wrestler's entrance theatrics. We're sure the options there are vast and time consuming as well.
