WWE Smackdown! vs. RAW 2007

WWE Smackdown! vs. RAW 2007 is an explosion of unbelievable visuals and man-slapping, death-defying stunts. If the life-like graphics don't tickle your fancy, the new and improved grappling system most certainly will.

Grappling With Success
Hey, what's over there? It's a strong grapple off the turnbuckle!

Hey, what's over there? It's a strong grapple off the turnbuckle!

From the right-analog stick alone, over 30 grapple moves are available to you from the start of every match. The revamped control scheme is a radical change for the series (and yes, classic 2006 controls are still available). But if you give the reworked controls a chance, you'll see that the changes are for the better. To perform a quick grapple, you simply flick the right analog stick in any direction; this will quickly slam your opponent to the mat with a basic throw. Once down, flicking the right-analog stick again will further punish your opponent, initiating a pin, submission, or some other wacky stunt to thoroughly humiliate the poor sucker.

The magic of the new right-analog mechanic is that it allows for tons of variety. Holding down the right bumper while grappling, for instance, will initiate one of four strong grapples. Once you've snared your foe in a strong grapple, you have a choice; drag him over to one of the many new environment hotspots (more on that later), or deliver devastation with a pile driver, atomic bomb, or a classic vertical suplex. To the breadbasket!

Booker T will

Booker T will "ultimate control" his foot right down your throat

It doesn't end with analog-based throws, though. Also new to the grappling system are so-called "ultimate control moves," which put you in...um, ultimate control. When applying a strong grapple, clicking the right analog stick will open an entirely new set of analog-twirling "ultimate" moves. These attacks are highly interactive, and often involve you lifting the other wrestler over your head: from this position, you can walk your victim to any location, throw them outside the ring, or spin them around. Ultimate control moves are far more strenuous on your wrestler -- and on your thumbs -- but the momentum boost and resulting damage make them well worth the effort.

Each wrestler in Smackdown! vs. RAW 2007 has a stamina and momentum bar; health and popularity, respectively. Your stamina level will affect your ability to endure exhausting matches like the infamous Royal Rumble, while the momentum bar signifies how well you are playing to the crowd. In a strategic twist, clean and dirty fighting styles require different strategies for gaining the approval of the crowd. Once the momentum bar is full, devastating signature moves become available. To key to defeating a fighter with high momentum, we've found, is to stick with strong grapple throws and ultimate control moves: these will bring his momentum crashing back to Earth.
