Medal of Honor: Heroes

Medal of Honor explodes onto the PSP with 32-player online and a host of promising handheld features.

PSPers have probably noticed the obvious lack of first-person shooters on Sony's handheld, and considering the absence of a second analog stick, it's not surprising that publishers are being hesitant to take the plunge. More than a year after the launch of the PSP, there has only been one true FPS on the system: Coded Arms. And we all know how that story wrapped up...

EA is out to turn the tides with the first Medal of Honor (MOH) on the PSP and only the second FPS on the handheld console. Its flagship FPS franchise it probably its best bet for initial success, though there are plans to roll out Battlefield on the PSP in the near future.

But right now, it's all about Medal of Honor: Heroes.

To be completely honest, considering the PSP's shoddy track record for console franchise conversions and the mediocrity of the last few console MOH titles, I wasn't expecting much from Heroes. But by the end of the demo I was seriously impressed.

So what happened?

Well, there are a couple reasons to get excited about Heroes. First and foremost, EA has really nailed the control scheme. The movement and aiming control scheme is just about the best you can hope to get our of the PSP and its single-analog stick scheme. The idea is nothing new -- move with the analog stick, aim with the face buttons -- but the execution is exceptional. The fluidity and preciseness of aiming is miles ahead of Coded Arms, as fine movements are now possible even when zoomed in with the sniper rifle. Second, Heroes will support 32-player online multiplayer, quite an astonishing feat that doubles that

And Holt Makes Three...

Heroes is not a rehash of past MOH games, but it will bring back three familiar players from MOH games of yore. Our trio consists of Lt. Jimmy Patterson from MOH: Frontline, Sgt. John Baker from Allied Assault: Breakthrough, and Lt. William Holt from European Assault, and play as one of the three characters through 15 new missions set in new environments.
