Fans of vehicular mayhem take note: Full Auto 2: Battlelines is racing onto the PS3 with both guns blazing. But is this next-gen sequel destined to be a lemon or a cherry?
The first Full Auto roared out of the gate but ended up puttering past the finish line on four flat tires-critics and fans alike bemoaned its mindless gameplay that basically boiled down to "Burnout with guns." Developer Pseudo Interactive is back with a next-gen sequel that hopes to get the franchise off its concrete blocks and back on the road to success. I recently took the game's the multiplayer portion for a spin.
Destructive AND sly -- a nasty combo
Paint Job
Thanks to the power of the Xbox 360, the first Full Auto dazzled with graphics as smooth and polished as a freshly waxed car. Improving on the visuals will be a challenge but the development team is looking to take full advantage of the PlayStation 3's hardware to push the visuals to new heights. Next-gen effects such as HDR and motion blur were used extensively and gave the game an amped up the sense of speed.
Admittedly, we'd seen it all before in games such as Buronout and Need for Speed but there was a palpable sense of motion when the cars kicked into high gear. The in-game environments were also highly detailed, but I was disappointed by how small they felt. Although the cityscape loomed large, the actual course was hemmed in by invisible barriers that cut the racing short after a few blocks.
"Please disperse! There is nothing to see here!"
