The Sims 2: Pets

In The Sims 2: Pets, man's best friend does more than just defile the front lawn!

Come October, PC gamers will add man's best friend (dogs) and man's worst enemy (cats) to the list of customizable characters in the best-selling simulation series. The Sims 2: Pets will hit the PC as an expansion pack, but on consoles the game will ship as a full version, proving that the console versions do in fact have as much bite as their bark.

The game, available for nearly every major console in October, will add creature comforts to the enormously popular simulation franchise.

Cat Scratch Fever

Every version of The Sims 2: Pets will include a Create-A-Pet feature, which EA is promising will extend from dogs and cats to caged animals. And it isn't just Nintendogs. EA also says that the Create-A-Pet feature will enable players to custom-design the look and temperament of their animal friend -- "from smart and sweet to silly and sloppy."

For the most part, Cats and Dogs in The Sims 2: Pets act in almost the same way as do normal human Sims characters. They interact with other just as people do, but their social interactions will be a bit different, obviously. That's not to say you don't have that crazy uncle who pants and sniffs crotches, but that's probably a touchy subject that we don't need to elaborate on ... for now.

Pets also have regular Sims-like needs, such as hunger and the need to hit the restroom, plus the little guys will also have the necessity to do pet things, such as scratch, play, and go fetch.

That "thing" better be declawed

Pets aren't always sugar and spice, however -- some naughty pets will chew up the furniture and dig holes in the yard. But the game will allow you to apply discipline and verbal commands to smooth out their bad-doggie behavior. And, if your feisty feline is wreaking havoc in your pretty little palace, you'll probably want to consider ponying for a scratching post, or just give Chairman Meow a timely punt onto the front lawn.

Each of the platforms offers their own exclusive features, but the PC version has the most interesting frills: you'll be able to custom-breed your pooches to create beasts like the "Labradoodle," the "Puggle," and the "Schnoodle." On the PC, pets can also hold down regular jobs -- security, show business, or service-related work.

The console versions of the The Sims 2: Pets will not have the massive customization and character options that are available on the original Sims 2 game, so to compensate, Maxis added lots with a loads of new stuff to suit up your pets with.

The Sims 2: Pets will ship on October 17th for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy Advance, as well as on PC as an expansion pack. A PSP version will be available in November.
