Splittin' TimeWhat do you get when you cross time travel, developers who worked on Goldeneye 007, and the power of the PlayStation 2? You get Timesplitters, Eidos' first foray into the first-person shooter genre. Timesplitters is taking a new direction for console shooters, allowing you the choice of multiple time periods and complete weapon sets, and it'll even give you the opportunity to create your own deathmatch levels. How's that for customization?
This Old Dungeon
Timesplitters' coolest feature is the ability to create your own maps using the included tile-based map editor. Choose a theme (based on the different time periods in the game) and use pre-made tiles to create your level. Should you decide to change the theme when the level is finished, that decision will not only change textures, but also certain design features! So when you change from the rocket theme to the medieval theme, those giant rockets in the center of the room will change magically into huge, stonework columns. You have to see it to believe it.
Unreal Expectations
Timesplitters will have some nasty competition at the hands of Unreal Tournament on the PS2. While TS has the customization and originality edge, UT will have name support and long months of design experience behind it. Free Radical Design is doing one thing that could push it over the edge: low blood. Timesplitters will be the choice for those who enjoy action but don't care about gibs, allowing parents to seriously consider getting the Teen-rated, less-gory game for younger kids. Either way, Eidos is making sure shooter fans get their due on Launch Day.
