D1 Grand Prix

Gameplay revolves around you trying to qualify for competition by accumulating points in three preliminary rounds and then taking part in an actual tournament. Tournament battles are also unique too because it's also split into two rounds. In the first round, you'll be the lead car in front of your competitor. You'll be tasked to accumulate drift points, and distance yourself from your competition so he won't be able to drift within your own inside drift line. The second round pits you as the attacker/follower. You're tasked to accumulate drift points and try to get into your opponents inside drift line without hitting him. Once both rounds are over, the game tallies up the points to see who was dominate and accumulated the most drift points.

While the entire concept of D1 GP is awesome and can move even the most hardcore gear head to wet his paints, there are several conceptual problems that seem to plague our preview build. The game plays great and if you're into automobile simulation racers you'll have a blast, but if you're looking for a pick up and play drift racing game, this may not be the title for you.

D1 GP is a heavily engineered drift simulation game. The physics are pretty spot-on to real life drifting and if you don't have the slightest clue about vehicle movement and engine theories, you're going to be lost. The game does include a tutorial which attempts to give the user a crash course in drifting physics and the game controls, but uninitiated gamers will find this process simultaneously enlightening and frustratingly difficult --similar to the Gran Turismo license tests.

Once you've passed the mandatory tutorial, you'll gain access to the D1 Series Mode where amateur drifters will discover that the tutorial taught you about twenty-five-percent of what you actually need to know, and you'll have to pretty much go through every track in the game with your car to familiarize yourself with the best techniques to tackle the more difficult corners on the courses.

While the difficulty for new gamers is set rather high, our D1 GP previewable build delivers exactly what it promises --a hardcore drift game for hardcore drift fans.
