It's me, Mario? Again!
When Nintendo finally lifted the covers off its new console, everyone knew what titles were likely to appear with the system. For the most part, that has held true. No Nintendo system launch would be complete without a new game with a certain Italian plumber and so we have Mario 128 (get it? Like Mario 64, but with more bits). The interactive demo had literally hundreds of Marios onscreen showing off the power of the system, but the emphasis was on how much fun this game could potentially be. The graphics were certainly very, very sharp, but it's hard to say what the final game will look like. It's a sure bet it'll be good though.

It's me, Link? Again!
Next up was another obvious and most welcome choice, Zelda! The demo showed Link and his arch-nemesis Gannon going toe to toe. Cool stuff indeed. This, like all the other games listed below, was not playable and ran on video. A somewhat unexpected game making its debut on GameCube was Wave Race. The original set standards for the N64, and it looks to do the same for GameCube. This demo looked the most like it was a pure CG video and not actual gameplay.

LucasArts also threw their support behind GameCube with a quick view of X-wings flying in formation and strafing the surface of the Death Star. This demo looked like it came from an actual game, and even with many telltale graphical glitches, it still looks good and as enjoyable as their previous Star Wars titles on the N64.

Next up was a quick flash of Joanna Dark, but no gameplay. It was just a quick teaser announcing that Perfect Dark is definitely coming to this system.

It's me, Samus? Finally!
Last, but definitely not least, is the game N64 fans have been begging for. The long delayed return of Metroid is finally a reality. Samus looks to be in top-notch condition and the demo looked damn good, though again, it seemed more like pre-rendered 3D scenes than actual gameplay. Still, Metroid's appearance is enough to warrant great joy throughout the land, and it virtually ensures that many folks will be in line to pick up a GameCube come next October. Check out the various screens below, but keep in mind that these are just demos and may not look quite as nice in final form. Then again, they just might! We'll know May 2001 when Nintendo will show the first games in playable form to the press.
