Finally, someone is fighting Square's console RPG dominance! In mid-June, Sony will fire its volley into the RPG genre with a four-disc game called The Legend of Dragoon.

Finally, someone is fighting Square's console RPG dominance! In mid-June, Sony will fire its volley into the RPG genre with a four-disc game called The Legend of Dragoon. Firmly rooted in the genre made popular by Final Fantasy VII, Dragoon uses the familiar 3D characters on pre-rendered 2D backgrounds to tell its epic story.

And What a Story It Is!
You play as Dart, a cleverly named young man who is out to get revenge for the destruction of his hometown. A menacing figure known only as the Black Monster killed Dart's family and demolished his old stomping grounds, and now it's time for payback. Over the course of his adventures, Dart will find allies in the strangest of places, and he and his friends will all learn crazy combos for slicing up enemy monsters. Sony hopes these wild moves will mix up the combat scenes and offer a little variety to the choose-attacks-from-a-menu style of RPG battles.

Possibly Legendary
The preview version shows off the early story and game mechanics, and they look nice. While many companies are struggling to find a new twist on the now classic FFVII RPG style, Sony's newest offering remains more or less the same. If Legend of Dragoon can find a new hook to grab old-school role-players, then it could reach legendary status when it's released on June 14.
