Assassin's Creed

The PS3 enters the Holy Land in Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed

Best case scenario: This is a transcendent experience, an instant classic that utilizes the power of next-gen consoles to captivate gamers; attention and imaginations in a way that very few titles can.

Worst case scenario: Assassin's Creed is still hecka fun, but it feels more like a formulaic, mission-by-mission progression.

Tread carefully, assassin. You are on enemy ground, in Acre, one of the most contested cities during the Crusades.

Your mission is to assassinate a member of the English nobility. As you might imagine, it won't be easy. Would you have undergone the elaborate, secretive rituals of becoming an assassin --including the loss of your index finger -- otherwise?

As you enter the town, you blend in with the crowd. A considerable portion of your rigorous training is centered on this very skill. Because in 12th century Acre, standing out will result in your death.

Look both ways to make sure the coast is clear. Now scramble up onto that wall to get a better vantage point of the city and your target, using an exposed brick as leverage. Unfortunately, just as you start climbing, a crowd of unruly peasants rounds the corner and starts to gawk at you. Their shouts draw a crowd. Time to get moving -- this unwanted attention could draw the guards.

Quickly now, assassin. You scramble over a series of buildings, vaulting acrobatically over beams, even swinging between several.

Using the game's special (and unique) controls, you lock in on your target. There he is, the pompous windbag, striding so confidently in front of a trio of victims strung up by their neck. What was their sin? Espionage? Adultery? Speaking their mind? These are tumultuous times, so it could be anything.

Execution time. The target has his back to the wall, and is flanked by two burly bodyguards. A short path runs in front of him, and the hanged men are to his right. You could go at this a number of ways. After careful examination of the scene, you decide to blend in with the crowd constantly passing through this area on the main path.

Steady?as you move past your target, you leap out of the crowd at him. When you were initiated into the secret cult of assassins, you gave up your index finger. A spring activated blade has replaced. This blade is your primary instrument of death when you assassinate them, and you use it now. Before your target or his bodyguards know it, you've made a fatal incision. Your victim looks you in the eyes before crumpling to his death.
