Resistance: Fall of Man

Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games readies Resistance: Fall of Man for PS3 launch.

Few developers have churned out as many action-packed adventures as longtime Sony counterpart Insomniac Games, so it isn't surprising that the Insomniac CEO Ted Price and the rest of the Ratchet & Clankers will have a new title ready for the PS3 launch. And this time there's no furry Lombax to lighten the local color.

Resistance: Fall of Man was first demoed by Ted at the Game Developer's Conference in March, and again at Sony's Press Event at E3 last week. And it gets cooler every time we see it. The game is a dark first-person shooter set in a 20th century reality that blends military combat with a hint of survival horror. While you won't see any cartoony graphics or cutesy robots, Insomniac has adapted the same lust for weapons into Resistance that was abundant in R&C.

Insomniac boasts a wide variety of horrifying creatures, physics-based weaponry, playable vehicles, and highly detailed, diverse environments, and this is pretty much what we got when we jumped into the playable E3 build.

Mass Mutants

The story is of the mutation/virus gone awry variety where a mysterious species called the Chimera has overrun Russia and all of Europe. Or course, humanity rests on one man, Sgt. Nathan Hale who will lead a team of US and British forces against the rapidly multiplying race of creatures.

The demo level was featured a few different king of enemies overrunning a European base, including a small, creepy spidery kind from the GDC demo, as well as some new lanky-legged creatures and a few others. To take care of these guys, we had some fun weapons at our disposal, including the Hedgehog, a spiked grenade stops in the air to shoots needles in all directions, as well as bullets that can be directed around corners and an energy gun that can shoot through walls. There is also a pretty standard shotgun, too, for blasting baddies the old fashioned way.

But it's not just about single-player. Insomniac laid the groundwork for its multiplayer experience with the last couple installments of R&C, but is making a big jump with Resistance. It will feature 2-player co-op, 4-player split screen online, and 32-player online multiplayer, which is said to be highly customizable in the new PS3 online network.

We expect Sony to swing by in the near future with more on Resistance: Fall of Man leading up to the PS3 launch. And when they do, there'll be hell to pay if they want it back.
