Hands-On: Prey

Our first hands-on experiences with Prey...and you might be surprised by what we found. Read on!

Old-school PC devotees might remember Prey, a quirky first-person shooter by 3D Realms that began production in 1997 following the company's smash hit Duke Nukem 3D. In its original form, Prey had quite a bit going for it: an ambitious plot, mind-bending architecture, and a throbbing industrial soundtrack courtesy of KMFDM.

But in a bizarre twist, the developers never finished that game. Prey ultimately ceased production in 1999 following several high-profile delays and well-documented difficulties. But the developers at 3DRealms (of Duke Nukem 3D fame) never gave up hope that Prey might one day live again.

Prey Back
Enter Human Head Studios, a developer perhaps best known for the Viking-themed slasher game Rune. Human Head and Take-Two Interactive have resurrected Prey, tuning it into a slick Xbox 360/PC sci-fi blaster with brains.

Though 3D Realms is no longer directly developing the title, Chris Rhinehart of Human Head made it clear that 3D Realms is still loosely overseeing its development. As in the original game, Prey's protagonist is of Native American descent. In keeping with the original premise, the story still revolves around a massive alien invasion. Finally, the much-publicized portal technology--now running on heavily modified Doom 3 tech--is intact and more mind-bending than ever.

We recently had a rare opportunity to see Prey in action, both on the Xbox 360 and the PC. We're pleased to report that Prey looked surprisingly slick and polished.
