Sonic Riders

Sonic and friends are ready for some extreme racing action and we've got all the latest details.

Sonic and friends are collecting Chaos Emeralds . . . again, and they've entered in a World Grand Prix hover board tournament to get them. It seems Dr. Eggman has concocted another mysterious grand scheme to covet the jewels by hosting a racing tournament and charging entrants a single Chaos Emerald a piece to join, and the winner gets the whole shebang. Will Sonic and crew be able to beat out all the other contestants, and thwart Dr. Eggman from whatever evil shenanigans he's planning?

Sonic Riders is a hover board racing game that combines aspects of snowboarding and surfing with a hi-impact racing engine, which is wrapped tightly with signature Sonic world styling. You'll be able to play as 16 various Sonic world characters including a new rival group called the Babylon Rogues in over 13 fast paced intense tracks. The tracks range from Metal City, Splash Canyon, Sand Ruins, to the Egg Factory.

Unique to Sonic Riders is the innovative Turbulence system which will allow you to catch the drift of your opponents to leave them in your dust. Drifting allows you to pick up speed or even use the drift stream wake to initiate stunts. Additionally, you'll be able to unlock cool Extreme Gear. There will be a total of 40 unique upgradable items to equip.

Our preview build seemed pretty polished up with only a few areas of gameplay concern. The Turbulence system seemed stellar. It allows players who fall behind to come back without having to resort to costly pit crew stops. The engine runs pretty fast but controls seem a little sluggish for the pace of most of the races. Additionally, obstacles and sudden turns are very hard to navigate and break the feeling of intense speed. Initiating and completing tricks is pretty easy and straight forward, but our build kept registering failures even when we pulled off a SS grade stunt.

With a few tweaks Sonic could be a descent addition to the Sonic world, and a good contender in the family friendly racing category. But one has to wonder why Sonic needs a hover board at all. Isn't he a super fast hedgehog?
