With several boxing legends including Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and Oscar De La Hoya, Fight Night Round 3 tailors gameplay to each boxer's specific fighting style. This means that you'll need to fight according to a boxer's specific strengths and weaknesses. So, if you're fighting with Ali, don't think you can charge in and wail, Tyson-style -- he'll definitely tire out. With Ali, you'll really need to float like a butterfly, so to speak to dance and defend until your opponent begins to wear. Inversely, other fighters may benefit from a more powerful fighting style, e.g., moving less and consistently throwing hard combos.
New to Round 3 is Rivalries mode, a chance to relive boxing's greatest rivalries of yore, with ESPN Classic video footage that preludes each fight, and the opportunity to recreate some of the sport's most classic bouts. Fight as Ali and take on Frasier, or clash Gatti with Mickey Ward the choice is yours.
To Each, His Own
Character creation is, of course, one of the main game modes in Fight Night Round 3, and lets players craft a unique boxer, with a distinctive fighting style, to lead through an illustrious career in fisticuffs. Training events improve stats, and the AI is built to adapt to user strengths and weaknesses, meaning fair competition throughout the majority of bouts.
Just as in Fight Night Round 2, boxer cuts, bruises, and swelling can be patched up during round breaks by an analog stick-based mini game that is somewhat less tedious in Round 3. All three console systems, including PSP, will support online play, and even though current-generation consoles can't compete with the Xbox 360's visual superiority, all do feature HUD-less gameplay. Our favorite part: Hard Hits -- a special game mode where a round doesn't end until someone is knocked out. Brutal.
