The Movies

Molyneaux's silver-screen sim is shaping up to be an eccentric blockbuster.

Do you have a rubber band-held ponytail, mirrored sunglasses, and an over inflated sense of self-esteem? Well, now's your chance to become haughty Hollywood slime. Lionhead Studios and Peter Molyneux are bringing the silver screen moviemaking sim, The Movies, to PC this fall. The game puts you at the helm of a virtual film studio(s) where you control everything from directors to cast to lazy, unhygienic teamsters--all for just a smidgen more than the price of a movie ticket and a pint size popcorn.

Though the many different puzzle pieces of a movie studio are inherently complex, Lionhead has designed the interface of The Movies to be fluid and user friendly. You'll attempt to build a small budget into a thriving profit-yielding empire as the game progresses from the silent era to the present period of soul-selling blockbusters. The basic idea has you building sets and assigning cast and crew to the appropriate places--a pop-up bubble system provides constant guidance, while highlighted pathways keep you on track with your objectives. There are a cornucopia of customizable options and features, and the game's special interfaces (StarMaker, post-production tool) allow for even more detail alteration.

And if the personal satisfaction of crafting up a potential Oscar winner isn't enough, The Movies' official website will host virtual film festivals to compete with other up and coming moviemakers across the globe.
