We get our hands on the first part of Majesco's epic science-fiction tale of Evolution, love, and genocide.
We recently got a chance to play a bit of Advent Rising, the first part in Majesco?s three-game science-fiction epic. The levels seem to be capitalizing on the promise of a hugely cinematic experience ? la Half-Life?as you battle, there?s tons of stuff going on around you, including aliens who do more than just target their guns at you and spectacular sequences where portions of a starship get ripped from the hull and sucked out into space (people and aliens included) as you fight in the room next door. In one segment, switches on the wall turned off gravity in a room, sending chairs, tables, weapons, and enemies sailing off into the air.The control scheme is unique but versatile. As in Red Faction II, each trigger operates the weapons or super-human power attached to the associated hand. The Zelda-inspired targeting is a bit odd?flicking the stick toward an enemy in any direction puts them in your sights?but provides for quick selection once you get used to it. Beneath the layers of prealpha grit (the early Xbox build we played was clearly unoptimized?the game looked much better on the PC), Advent Rising still has a lot of potential.
