Skimpy outfits, amazing women and some of the best wrestling action ever. Could WWX be the first real challenger to THQ's WWE franchise?
Mixing wrestling and women may seem like an obvious choice for a video game, so it is surprising that no one has done it before and it is doubly surprising that Konami, a company with a less than stellar history when it comes to sports titles, would be the one to produce it.Billed as the ?first ever all women wrestling? game, WWX: Rumble Rose promises to mix good looking women with a solid wrestling engine in order to be more than just a game with simple sex appeal. Were Konami taking on this task alone we would be more than a bit skeptical, however the company has wisely chosen to partner with two experts in the field -- Polygon Magic and Yuke?s Entertainment.
Polygon Magic is best known for its work in developing the CG movies for Dead or Alive 3 and Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball while Yuke?s has made its name developing high quality wrestling titles such as WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain. If there is one thing both companies have, it is talent.
The core gameplay should be similar in style to Yuke?s previous work, though according to Konami representatives WWX will fall squarely on the ?extreme? side of the scale. Stereotypical ?catfighting? moves, such as hair-pulling and face slapping, will likely find their way into the game, right alongside the more traditional wrestling moves.
?WWX is a powerhouse combination with some of the best wresting action found on any platform, sexy female models, audacious poses and bold moves - all delivered with state-of-the-art graphics for a visually stunning game,? said Akari Uchida, producer, Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo.
After choosing a character, players will have to choose their fighting style -- dirty or fair -- and the choice will affect which moves are available for use as well as the character?s look and feel. A humiliation system will be in place, allowing players to taunt their opponents in an attempt to break their spirit, however too much teasing can backfire. If you manage in push your opponent past embarrassment and into anger she will temporarily gain additional moves.
So far Konami has only revealed two characters, Dixie Clemets and Reiko Hinomoto, both of which are featured in the screenshot gallery. Clemets sports a western flair and a special move entitled ?Dixie?s Buster.? Clad in red latex, Hinomoto is a master of the dropkick and the German suplex pin -- her special move is called ?Double Moonsault.?
Unfortunately Konami did not have any gameplay footage to show, only rendered movies, but the premise of the game is decidedly enticing and developer Yuke?s is incredibly excited to be working on the game.
?When Konami approached us with the concept, we could hardly wait to get started,? said Yuke Taniguchi, president of Yuke?s Entertainment. ?We are excited to develop a new style of wrestling game - one that provides a high quality wrestling experience, but also introduces humor and a whole lot more sex appeal.?
At this point, no decisions have been made about online play, but it is under consideration. Another aspect of the game that has yet to be determined is the maximum number of players. WWX will support at least two players, though the developers are considering a four-player mode.
With a scheduled release date of November 2004, you shouldn?t expect to see WWX: Rumble Rose on store shelves anytime soon, however Konami will be making the game available for play at E3 in May. We?ll have more on the lovely ladies of WWX as soon as we stop drooling.
