The Suffering

What if executed inmates returned as super-powerful monsters? Time to rethink your position on the death penalty.

The Xbox preview build of Midways upcoming survival/horror title, The Suffering (also headed to the PS2), skips the introductions and goes straight for the jugular. The story begins with Torque, the anti-hero, landing on death row. Within minutes, the other inmates are spewing more than vulgarities as Spawn-ish supernatural monstrosities disembowel everyone in sight. The graphics are disturbingly realistic, and terrifying screams echo down the prisons moldy corridors. The controls are typical for a third-person action game, and flashlight batteries are indispensable for peering into dark corners. The Sufferings nine levels unfold entirely in and around Torques maximum security prison, which must have been built on the site where Atari buried its loathsome E.T. carts back in the 1980s. Why else would the spirits of executed inmates be so angry?
