Spawn offers up a gory romp through Todd McFarlane?s world on the brink of the Apocalypse.
Spawn offers up a gory romp through Todd McFarlane?s world on the brink of the Apocalypse, as the comic anti-hero fights hordes of demons, monsters, and angels as a key figure in the eternal struggle of good vs. evil. The combat system in the PS2 preview build (it?s also going to be released on GameCube and Xbox) is coming together nicely, with a refined mix of firearms and Spawn?s unique melee weapons. Technique points are earned for particularly effective attacks, such as blowing an Imp?s head off with the shotgun, and can be traded for weapon power ups between levels. One drawback to combat is the target lock: sometimes it selects objects instead of enemies, which can lead to awkward situations in which you annihilate a harmless desk while the demonspawn in front of you remains unscathed. But then, you always have the battle-axe to fall back on?Though not yet fully integrated, Spawn?s Hell Powers show a lot of promise. Six powers are available, including Necroplasm Ball, Necroplasm Beam, Glow, Hell Dash, Hell Speed, and Demonic Fury. In the finished game, these powers will be necessary to get past certain critical points.
The twisted settings and macabre creature design add tremendously to Spawn?s atmosphere. The environments range from simple and straightforward to detailed and grotesque. In one level, Spawn is blasting his way through a well-appointed art deco office building, only to find that the board room has been turned into a sacrificial altar replete with disemboweled corpses hanging from the ceiling and severed limbs piled about haphazardly. Suffice to say that the M rating will be well deserved. The quality of the preview indicates that the finished product should be enjoyable even for those who haven?t read the comic book.
