Magic the Gathering: Battlegrounds

The now-classic collectible card game gets the action/strategy treatment for the Xbox.

A zillion expansion packs, an epic-sized menagerie of cool creatures, and a concept that?s withstood the test of time, and still there?s not a good Magic the Gathering game that?s more than just a card game on a TV screen. Magic the Gathering: Battlegrounds could prove to be the turning point in the war.

Magic the Gathering: Battlegrounds is a sort of action/strategy game in which you run around an arena as one of nine wizards set with the seemingly simple goal of killing another wizard. You do this by summoning an army of creatures to protect and fight for you, and by casting spells from two of the five traditional Magic color schools?black, blue, green, red, and white. You can also cast enchantments from the five schools to give special abilities to your summoned monsters (restorative powers, attack bonuses, that sort of thing).

While it may appear to be strongest as a two-player dueling game, MTG:Battlegrounds also has a single-player Quest Mode based on the mythology and history of the Magic the Gathering card game. The Quest Mode has six chapters with up to 15 quests per chapter, and potential duelists can unlock new spells and items by playing through. Battlegrounds wisely supports Xbox Live, too, not just for multiplayer duels, but for downloading spells, wizards, and other such Magicky goodness. Look for it this November on Xbox and PC.
