How does the multi-player action in Soldier of Fortune II work? Hands on impressions inside.
Soldier of Fortune II on the Xbox hits stores in just a few weeks so weve brought you a few more crucial details you should know about. Earlier we reported Activision was going to support ten players via system link, with each person requiring their own Xbox (remember, no split-screen). The good news is the total number is now up to 12. On the online side, 20 maps will be available right away with five more made available shortly after retail release. And theres also the random level generator if you tire of the preset maps or dont want experienced player to have an advantage in favorite locales. We were able to test the multi-player functions and came away quite satisfied. Counter-Strike fans will feel right at home with the match styles and overall themes of objectives. Compared to our hands-on time with the Xbox Counter-Strike at the recent 2003 E3 show, SoF II felt a touch more sluggish. This was due to some slight lag inherent in current Xbox Live fps games, as Castle Wolfenstein players can no doubt attest. The E3 hands-on was also a very controlled environment so theres no telling how CS will handle in the real world either. Even as is, SoF IIs play is minimally affected, so its a minor quibble at this point.
Well be back with a review at the time of the games release, so til then enjoy the latest screens.
