StarCraft: Ghost

Blizzard's first console game in ages isn't exactly what everyone expected. It's an action game, for one. And there's no pointing or clicking involved.

When Blizzard announced it would be showing a console-exclusive title at the 2002 Tokyo Game Show, most game writers couldn't help but let their imaginations go wild. StarCraft 2! Warcraft 4! Some kind of wacky 3D Diablo! Anything's possible! In the end, though, Blizzard itself had the last laugh: All these guesses were nowhere near what was actually unveiled.

StarCraft: Ghost may take place in the same universe as the classic computer RTS, but you can throw out your PC mouse right now?it's a 3D tactical-action game similar in style to Metal Gear Solid. You'll be in control of Nova, an elite Ghost operative sent on a series of covert missions in space. Nova is one very powerful lady: Besides the usual stealth moves, she can cloak herself, move at hyper speeds (i.e. bullet time), and call for support forces in the middle of missions.

The demo Blizzard showed off in Tokyo revealed the MGS-style flexibility and smooth action the game is already capable of. Ghost will begin with Nova breaking into a rogue Terran base, sneaking past armored guards, and using her psionic abilities to detect enemies through walls. As it turns out, someone is using this base to experiment on StarCraft's Zerg aliens, who (being aliens) decide to escape and kill everyone in sight. It'll be up to Nova to dispose of these nasties with her arsenal of StarCraft-inspired weaponry?everything from Gauss Rifles to Perdition Flamethrowers.

Blizzard and co-developer Nihilistic Software (of Vampire: The Masquerade fame) are busy adding a level of detail to Ghost that's rarely seen on console action games. One example: Nova will be able to take down armored guards with one hit by shooting them in the face when their visors are down?a very satisfying way to deal with wimpy enemies. Very nice. Of course, Blizzard being Blizzard, we'll just have to be content with hearing about the game for now?it's not due out until late 2003. Sorry.
