As if the Three Kingdoms saga wasnt complicated enough, Koei introduces an expansion to Dynasty Warriors 3 with new characters and modes.

Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends may not be much of a departure from its million-selling ancestor, but if you couldnt get enough of DW3, youll be glad to know that XL will delve deeper into the saga of the Three Kingdoms by introducing seven new unaligned warriors. If youre new to the franchise, XL will play as a standalone game, but it will also work in conjunction with DW3, so youll be able to edit bodyguards from your old save files. Amidst the inexplicably entertaining button mashing frenzy of tactical action, a new feature will enable you to handpick your bodyguards and equip them with all manner of magic items and weapons. Koei is also adding four new challenge modes, which will allow for quick, non-plotted hack-n-slash action.

Occasional camera problems and disappearing sprites didnt detract too much from the gameplay in the Japanese boxed version, and the split-screen multiplayer mode didnt seem to tax the graphics engine at all. The map areas were well designed for the strategic melee, but some levels were made artificially harder by poor placement of healing items. After four levels, the difficulty suddenly spiked upward, but at the same time, so did the interest in winning.

Note: This preview is based on the Japanese boxed version of the game.
