Starring arguably the greatest (and unarguably the nuttiest) boxer there ever was, Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing tries once again to horn in on Knockout Kings? territory.
Despite his loony behavior and occasional jail stints, Mike Tyson is still the boxing world?s biggest moneymaker. Codemasters tried parlaying his name into video success with Mike Tyson Boxing on the PlayStation back in 2000, but poor animation and lack of any real strategy kept it from hitting the big time. Tyson?s struck back, though, and Heavyweight Boxing will hit the PS2 and Xbox before the summer is through. The preview version we got to play featured extremely well detailed models of the boxers, although animation still needed a little work. An impressive facial damage system riddled the boxers? faces with cuts and bruises by the end of each match. Like the original, flailing away with body blows had little effect?you?ll have to watch your dodges and pummel your opponent with power punch combos to have any chance at victory.
Tyson and 18 other boxers are available, four of which you can fully customize with tattoos, body hair and hot-pink boxing trunks. Advancing your custom boxer through the game?s league mode will unlock extra boxers, stadiums, entry anthems and vicious new taunts. Is this game a contender? We won?t know for sure until the final version comes in, but the foundation is definitely there.
