Mech Assault

Giant robots shooting and blowing up stuff with no simulation aspects to slow things down. Sounds good so far?

Microsoft has slowly been unveiling their newest lineup, aiming to keep Xbox owners happy as well as drawing in a new audience. They dropped by the GamePro offices recently and showed off something that should manage to do both. Mech Assault is the third offshoot of the BattleTech series, and will be the first that?s not either a strict simulation (like MechWarrior) or a tactical strategy game (like Mech Commander). The emphasis here is all action, sort of ?borrowing? Halo?s control scheme to good effect with an armory of mechs that move with amazing agility.

So far, the game looks great, with all kinds of ground, mech, and building damage happening with a smooth frame rate. There are 12 unique battle bots that you can take command of and upgrade weapons and items before or during a mission. Although the gameplay deviates from what BattleTech fans are accustomed to, the vast, epic storyline very much incorporates familiar game world settings.

Perhaps the best news so far is that it is one of the first Xbox games that will support online play as well as split screen and system link capabilities. Seeing as the game is looking quite fantastic already, the long wait till November should bode well for a well-polished product.
