Dante's Inferno PSP Preview

The portable counterpart to Dante's console outing boasts all nine circles of Hell and more.

Instead of creating a spin-off of the console version, developers Artificial Mind and Movement (or A2M, who previously worked on WET) are taking the fully-realized vision of Hell as it will appear on the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Dante's Inferno and making it available on the go (pun intended). The PSP version of Dante will boast all the circles of Hell found in the console version, and the controls have been streamlined to make the game more PSP-friendly. The good folks at EA stopped by GamePro recently to show us how the game's coming, and also introduced us to a few new areas of Hell.

Our demo began in Anger, the fifth Circle of Hell. Here we led Dante across the river Styx on a platform toward the City of Dis, only the platform eventually rose from the water and revealed itself to be the towering demon Phlegyas. Escaping from Phlegyas' grasp we fought our way towards the gate of the city, avoiding the giant demon's fists as they thundered down on the walkway near Dante. Avoiding Phlegyas' blows we fought off the hordes of enemies surrounding Dante as we made our way further towards Dis. The combat here felt very similar to the console version of Dante, with just about all the same mechanics intact. Having seen the console version of this very same area, the A2M team deserves some major props for keeping the area true to its console counterpart.

We then skipped to a new section of the game which took place in the 6th circle of Hell, Heresy. Heresy contains some of the most treacherous platforming sections we've seen so far in Dante's Inferno, with quite a few jumping segments sending us to a fiery grave if timed incorrectly. We also encountered a new enemy class in Heresy aptly named the Heretic. These foes have the ability to make themselves and any other enemies nearby immune to Dante's cross attack, and are extremely tricky to take down as they'll constantly teleport to avoid Dante's advances.

The game still looks a bit early compared to the console version, with a few graphical and control elements that will need to be smoothed over before its February 9th release. If everything runs smoothly and these small issues are worked out, gamers should have another reason to enjoy Dante's descent into Hell next year.
