Band Hero Preview

Curious to see what sets Band Hero apart from other rhythm games? Heather and Will are here to give you the lowdown.

Heather: Will, I'm guessing your singing has the ability make dogs howl and glass shatter. Luckily we found out that this won't stand in your way in Karaoke Mode, where talent falls to the wayside in lieu of having a good time with up to three friends.

Will: I can't even tell you how many parties I've been kicked out of, friends I've lost and homes I've been evicted from on various karaoke nights.

Heather: I'm glad that I don't have to worry about your skills in the lyric-slinging department, but I'm also happy that the days of fighting over which one of us can be the guitarist is in the past. Band Hero allows any combination of band members you can imagine from a band full of drummers to three vocalists and a bassist.

Will: I'm always the guitarist, you know that. It's also worth mentioning that for first time in a Guitar Hero game, the DS iteration also allows players to take on vocal duties or, with the help of a unique rubber skin, play drums with their thumbs.

Heather: I could totally picture the playlist as the perfect soundtrack for a Middle School dance with its chart topping pop rock. Usually you can expect a random metal hit here and there or even some classic rock but it's purely Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift with Band Hero. Some of your favorites, right Will?

Will: Um, no. But, I did think that one of the coolest features the game offers is that the DS and the Wii versions not only feature different playlists, but also a unique connectivity that allows you to create playlists on the DS and stream them to your Wii in real time.

Heather: Definitely. Well all in all, it seems to me that Band Hero is to Guitar Hero what Lego Rock Band is to Rock Band, a more family oriented version of the franchise.

Will: From its many challenge modes to fan requests to in-depth character customization, Band Hero doesn't look like it's going to reinvent the wheel when it comes to musical simulations, but it certainly has enough new features to interest the casual gamer crowd.
