New Super Mario Bros. Wii Preview - Mario's greatest hits

I just finished an hour-long session of New Super Mario Bros. Wii at Nintendo headquarters, and I want to play more. I saw a decent section of the first two worlds, and I want to see more. I fell into many pits and got scorched by countless fireballs, sapped two continues, and I want to die more. If the chuckles, yelps, and smiles were any indication, this will be the best offline multiplayer gaming experience of this year, and possibly this generation.

I briefly got to try New Super Mario Bros. Wii out at E3 this year, but my extended playtime allowed me to grasp the many complexities of multiplayer brought to the game. Playing the game single-player allows for a traditional 2D Super Mario experience. You run, jump, and collect, but at your own pace, and to the best of your own abilities. With other players, exploring is a collaborative effort. As a team, you must be aware of each other's movements, being careful not to sprint too far ahead, erroneously enter a door or pipe, or snag an power-up that could have helped your friend.

Super Mario Team

For all of the possibilities of sabotage, there are many positives to teaming up. Reaching higher platforms is much easier when you work with a partner, as you can jump in the air, and then have the other player use your head as a springboard. When riding Yoshi, one player can toss a fireball into the dinosaur's gaping maw in order to create an even larger inferno. Most importantly, the game will continue as long as one player is alive and on-screen, so tricky platforming sections and tough boss battles can be bested by waiting for your allies to float back on screen. It may have taken three of us, but we were able to defeat Roy Koopa.

There are also a handful of new gameplay features we haven't seen in a Mario title before. While it's been seen before, the insane fun brought upon by the propeller caps bears mentioning again. The swinging cages in Roy's castle were also a blast, as the first character to climb aboard the fence could swing it left and right based on the Wii Remote's tilt. Playing the water stage while having the Ice Flower equipped was a crazy new experience, as the frozen fish would rise to the surface, allowing players to access new areas of the stage.

This game is going to be absolutely amazing. It seems that it has a little bit of everything from all the side scrolling Mario games which could make it the best Mario game to date. Right now that honor belongs to Mario. 3

I don't know what it is about classic Mario games that are so appealing and wonderful... Why a game like this is having me buy a Wii, when really, I've played pretty much the exact same game just 10 other ways. There's still the castles, there's still the pyramid/desert levels, there's still the same characters... just goes to show how truly amazing and groundbreaking Super Mario Bros (3 imo) really was for the Nintendo, and how important it was for gaming today. Classic Mario games are like the Beatles of video game world.
