Capture the... gas tank? Andy, Tae and Dave talk about L4D2's new Scavenge mode, and chat about the new Infected.
Tae: "Good luck finding a station. This place is packed, and no one wants to give up their controller. I can't say I blame them."
Andy: "Agreed. Alright, let's split up, maybe we'll have more luck finding somewhere to sit down and play. By the way, where the hell is Dave? He could be helping us out right now."
Tae: "I think he's on his way. If not, we get to throw the fact that we played a new L4D2 mode in his face tomorrow morning."
Last night started off something like that, accompanied by about thirty more minutes of Tae and I trying to find a place to snatch a controller away from the hordes of hungry game journalists soaking up Left 4 Dead 2. Dave Rudden eventually showed up and helped in the fight to procure a place to sit down and play. After a few minutes (which felt like hours) of drinking beers and contemplating our ultimate failure, we finally sat down and got a chance to check out the game. Here are our thoughts. --Andy
Andy: (follow me on Twitter!) We'll get to the new Scavenge mode in a minute, but I wanted to touch on Versus mode real quick. I felt like the inclusion of the new boss infected really added a new layer of strategy to the gameplay, and took a little adjusting when playing on the Survivor side. If players used the hulking Charger correctly, they could conceivably take out a player in one fell swoop. He has the ability to remove survivors from the group really quickly, but his ability takes a while to reload, leaving him completely vulnerable if he misses. What did you guys think?
Tae: (follow me on Twitter!) The Versus mode looks awesome. Same great forumla. The new additions look great, including the new Infected baddies. I really dug the Jockey who leaps onto the back of a Survivor and claws at their face while dragging them into danger. The Charger looks good too but it's going to be tricky lining up his charge power. I saw a lot of people miss and go running into random objects. I also didn't like the loooooooong respawn time for Infected players. Having to sit there for 20+ seconds while waiting to get back into the action is agonizing. Also, why do you always respawn near the Survivors? That just forces you to run around and hide. Why not just respawn you far away enough from the Survivors to penalize you for dying but not so far that it takes you out of the action?
But now I'm just nitpicking. The fact is, L4D2 looks like a great sequel and everyone who's bitching and moaning that it should've been a download pack or an add-on needs to just shut up and be patient. Valve's earned your trust so give it to them.
Dave: (follow me on Twitter!) I was really looking forward to playing as the Charger after he provided me with many "holy shit" moments during the campaign demo I tried out last month--I seriously saw that thing plow through my teammates by surprise like a mack truck after we turned corners and open doors . But the nature of his special move didn't work well within the demo, since the survivors weren't coordinating and clustered together. I seemed to have the best luck with the Spitter. Sure the thing is extremely weak--like the Boomer, it can be killed with one shot--but its slim form allows it to more easily sneak around, and its corrosive pleghm can nail a hapless survivor from afar. And then there's the Jockey. What did you think about that new Infected, Andy?

November 17th is going to be a great day to be on xbox live :)
Scavenge mode sounds like a blast and hectic as all hell. New/old infected are going to be a number of awesome things, interesting to try at first, finding strategies for the new comers, and also finding new hiding spots with the old infected since these are brand new campaigns. Nov. 17 is going to be a very fun day :)

Love the character designs in this... I'm so used to the "white, mid 30's, male, hero" type but they really mix it up in this one... Looks brutal, and I'm going to agree with Sid, definitely liked the 3-way format.

Great piece, the new mode sounds killer and the new boss infected are pretty intriguing. Can't wait for this game to release, I'll be getting it on the PC (as I do with most shooters) so hit me up on Steam if you're playing.
