The Behemoth's Game 3 (Working title)
- July 23, 2009 00:00 AM PST
The team that made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers show their newest project at Comic Con.
The third game from The Behemoth development studio is here at Comic Con for people to play and compete in tournaments to win prizes. If you're here at Comic Con, stop by The Behemoth's booth to play the new game in competitive multiplayer. Prizes include Castle Crasher figurines, t-shirts, limited edition posters, and more.
The game itself is difficult to categorize into one specific genre, but it's easy to play, fun, and still retains the signature 2D art style of The Behemoth's previous games, Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. "Game 3," The Behemoth is currently codenaming it, appears to be a mishmash of competitive team-based minigames, such as Super Mario Bros. 3's POW multiplayer, where you dash for coins, paint blocks, and steal each other's souls for points.
Too Cute to Fight
There's a world hub where you join up in teams of two and walk through doorways to enter 2v2 minigames. There are three minigames here at Comic Con for you to try out. One is a race to touch and paint as many blocks as you can in the arena, like Tony Hawk's Graffiti mode. The team with the most blocks painted their color at the end of the time limit wins. The second minigame is a race to collect as much gold as you can and deliver it to a floating safe. The funny thing is, the gold bars randomly spill out of a floating gold whale. If you die, yes you can die and I'll get to that next, all your coins spill out for the other team to collect, like when Sonic the Hedgehog gets hurt. Finally, the third mode confused me the most, but it appears to be a brawl to beat the souls out of the opposite team. A floating soul appears when you die in this mode, and you'll want to get it back before the other team does. These are the three modes at Comic Con, so buddy up and play them all.
Before entering the game, you'll want to customize your character though. You can choose from a variety of head shapes-square, triangle, round, cylindrical-and apply different faces. Faces are like Mr. Potato Head parts that vary from different eyeballs, beards, ninja masks, to gorilla mouths. To complete the character customization, the third component is your attack. This is how you kill the other team to collect their souls and gold bars. Special attacks include fireballs, exploding Frisbees, grenades, ice, and more. You can even punch and slide kick, but your special attack is the most powerful and effective way to eliminate the competition.
As I said, The Behemoth's Game 3 is here at Comic Con for you to get your hands on and play. There's a tournaments and prizes, a creepy but kind of cute clown girl mascot, and cool Behemoth staff to chat with about their games.

I blew The Behemoth's Tom Fulp and Dan Paladin's minds when I asked them if Castle Crashers will be playable on PS3. They said that's the first thing they're going to look into when they get back to real work.
