The King of Fighters XII: Hands-On

With less than a week to go before The King of Fighters XII hits shelves in North America, Ignition Entertainment has sent us to school with the game's new combat system. Plus, check out our KOF XII interview with IE's own Shane Bettenhausen!

The King of Fighters is a series that has been known for the longest time as the go-to place for jaw-dropping 99-hit Dream Cancel Combos and rosters crammed with dozens of characters. It's no secret that The King of Fighters XII is keeping the old-school tradition of 2D pixelated fighters in a 2D world, either. We've already said that KOF XII may be the most detailed 2D video game yet (after all, everything is hand drawn), but how does the upcoming fighter stack up with its new "reborn" combat system?

The King of Fighters XII: Hands-On

Yeah, the graphics look like dynamite, but how does it play?

Guard, Counter, Attack!

If you've never been able to master the art of the 99-hit infinite combo, don't fret: SNK and Ignition Entertainment have rebuilt the combat system of KOF into a much more friendly beast. Gone are the Saving/Quick Shifts, Tactical Shift System and Tag Attacks, instead replaced with the simple "3-on-3" team battle system. Not only does this place more emphasis on single battles, but you're now responsible for wisely choosing the order in which your 3-man team will fight.

The "Guard Attack" is basically your chance to the turn back a huge hit in KOF, much like the Focus Attacks in Street Fighter IV. Timed just right, you can either stun a lazy opponent, or absorb their attack and send them flying. We found that this works great against big opponents like Daimon, Raiden, and Ralf Jones, but spamming the Guard Attack is pretty much asking to get kicked in the face.

Please tell me you're getting this on PS3 so I play against you.

I'll probably be learning some Leona (I suck with charge characters) so I can finally use her for my team of Leona, Dou Lon and Benimaru. Or Mature, Benimaru and Dou Lon.

Ah alright sounds good. I'll probably be picking this up in the start of middlish of August, I want to hear about how the online play is like before I splunk down my 60 bones.

@denveraic: You should play some of the older KoF games. They are pretty good. I'm hearing so far that this KoF plays at about Street Fighter 3 speed. Which is a bit faster than SF4 speed if you've played that before.

The fighters rodster is way too small for a king of fighter game. What were they thinking with such small rodster. I'm very desapointed about this. Rather play MVC2 wish has a gigantic selcetion of characters

Yeah but MVC2 only has about 5 or 6 characters that matter.

AnimeRocker

I'll eventually get this although compared to BlueBlaze, its really ugly, and not to mention MVC 2 is so close to coming out so yeah.
