Battlin' Dragons
One element I was pleased to see was the UI of the Xbox 360 version of the game. The UI for the PC version is as you would expect, with many of the actions and character icons taking up a lower portion of the screen, and switching between fully controlling different characters and attacks is a snap. On the 360 version however, the interface is much more akin to that of Mass Effect. The game incorporates an ability wheel similar to ME's, but also allows attacks and spells to be toggled through in a separate section of the interface; as in the PC version, switching between characters is simple and intuitive. I'd even say that the ease of use for the console controls of a fairly complex RPG is very high in Dragon Age: Origins.
Along with checking out the console interface, we also got an updated taste of the battle system in Origins, and this might be where I was most surprised. When Bioware showed the game previously, what I saw of the battle system seemed clunky, and I especially wasn't impressed with the battle animations (I felt they lacked a certain aesthetic touch that I look for in Bioware titles). After playing the game this time around, I felt the system had definitely come a long way, and it should please fans of both action-oriented RPGs like Mass Effect, and fans of traditional PC RPGs. The ability to seamlessly switch between characters while managing attacks and magic is all handled very well, and after a few minutes of figuring out the nuts and bolts of the system I began handling battles admirably. Oh yes, and there is plenty of blood and gore to go around; some of the enemies are finished off in a fine, bloody mess. Awesome!
Dragon Age: Origins may not be exactly what fans of Mass Effect or Knights of the Old Republic are looking for in an RPG, what with its dark fantasy setting, but after playing it I would implore those gamers to at least give the game a look; it may surprise you, as it did me.
