Dragon Age: Origins Preview: Choose your destiny

Choices, choices... and dragons! We go hands-on with Bioware's dark fantasy RPG.

I recently had the chance to meet up with Bioware and get some post-E3 hands-on goodness with their latest project, Dragon Age: Origins (see my interview with Bioware's Dr. Ray Muzyka above). While checking out the game at E3 I was a little irked by the decision for the team to utilize a combat system similar to older sets of PC-centric RPGs, such as Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, but upon further inspection on my recent visit, and a closer look into the storyline and the deep character interaction focus, I'm pleased to say that Dragon Age: Origins is looking extremely promising and I'm now eagerly awaiting its October release.

The Origin of Origins

The main factors that shape much of what players experience later on in the game are the decisions they'll make during their origin story. Each player's origin story serves not only an introduction into the game world, but also as a deciding factor on how their individual character will integrate into the world, as well as how other NPCs will interact with them. In short, each of the six origin stories will allow players to experience vastly different takes on the overall story arch.

During my demo of Origins, two of the lead Bioware developers took a unique route on showing off how different the game can play depending on what origin story the player chooses. On two separate screens, I watched as each developer played through an identical segment of the game and saw how NPCs interacted with their lead character, and how these characters progressed by making different choices. In order to cross a bridge guarded by a lone soldier, one of the developers chose to intimidate the guard with a heavily-armored warrior known as Sten. Somehow the situation ended with the warrior handing some cookies to the guard, which was actually pretty funny. The other developer chose to use the sultry mage Morrigan to take the guard and... well, you can kinda guess what happened next.
