Bit.Trip Core Preview: Old school fun, new school cool

After watching Bit.Trip Core Designer Alex Neuse tackle the first stage, I (foolishly) thought I was ready to try it out myself. Mirroring my experience with Bit.Trip Beat, I quickly found myself falling prey to the many timing and visual tricks, and with the game playing with me in different directions, my failure was quickly compounded. It was only when I heeded Neuse's advice and played the game as more of a rhythm title that I was able to put together a decent showing, though I ultimately failed the stage.

My Two Bits

Despite my relatively poor showing, I decided to take on the stage again co-operatively with Neuse in the game's two-player mode. We decided to focus on specific planes, so I took anything that passed the vertical beams while he handled horizontal. Throughout the course of the stage, we picked up a variety of brief power-ups, including multi; which shoots an additional beam through the plane opposite of the one you shoot from (for example: shooting left will also shoot right), ultra; a beam that stays up as long as you hold down the button, and challenge; a double-edged sword of a powerup that increases point value, but flips the controls 90 degrees so that pressing up aims right. Like in Beat, the multiplayer mode isn't just a fun extension of the single-player gameplay, it serves as a much easier mode that will help less experienced gamers see more of this tough as nails title.

Fans of Bit.Trip Beat needn't worry; Core looks like it will serve the nascent series well. Fans of old school games should rejoice; Core has a great retro look and sound, while the gameplay brings to mind memories of Missile Command and Cosmic Ark. Fans of downloadable games should be ecstatic, as another great series may have just emerged. You can find out for yourself when the game releases for 600 Wii Points ($6) this Monday.
