The sequel to Bit.Trip Beat will be the 100th WiiWare game next Monday. Is it worthy of the honor?
Even with downloadable games in its infancy, a few brands have emerged as leaders. Names like Pixeljunk and Art Style have become synonymous with innovative, creative, and addictive downloadable content. Starting this Monday, another series may be joining their ranks, as Bit.Trip.Core becomes the second game in its series and the 100th WiiWare release.
You got the Bit
There's a strong sense of progression from Bit.Trip Beat to Core. Beat used the Wii Remote's motion sensor to act as a Pong-like paddle, while Core uses the digitial pad in a very 8-bit fashion. While Beat featured the old-school music as something of a reward, Core makes the music a more central gameplay. Last, but not least, the game itself moves in a far different fashion. Beat was played almost exclusively on a horizontal plane, as the paddle was used to stop blocks from progressing past the left side of the screen. Core is a different beast altogether, as the centered icon must destroy blocks coming from everywhere and anywhere. One thing that has stayed the same, however, is the visual and audio style, which takes on a very Atari-retro blocks and bloops approach.
Like in Bit.Trip.Beat, Core has an easy to learn, yet difficult to master gameplay style. The icon is shaped like a D-pad, and can shoot beams by pressing one of the four directions, and hitting the 2 button. Said beams are used to destroy incoming blocks, which will pass one or more of the directional planes. At first, the blocks will arrive steadily, in predictable directions like left-to-right and top-to-bottom, but the difficulty ramps up quickly, sending the blocks out in different directions.
