Black Rock Studios is back with another racer that oozes 'pure' adrenaline
Before my demo of Split Second started, one of the producers on the game pointed out something that I hadn't really thought about before: in most racing games, the environment mostly acts as scenery. It's just "stuff" that exists to give your car something to race on or around; at most, you interact with it when your car crashes into a barrier or a building or an on-coming car. What Split Second tries to do is make the environments an actual component of the racing experience.

The game accomplishes this by awarding you energy for your driving prowess. Doing things like drifting around a tight corner or drafting behind another racer fills up a three-tier meter; once you have enough energy, you can trigger events on the track that dramatically alter the course you're racing on. At the most basic level, that might involve the creation of a simple obstacle-a bus parked by the side of the road suddenly backs onto the track, forcing everyone to swerve around it; at the most complex level, it might involve destroying a part of the track and dramatically altering the race course.
The two levels I saw had a ton of trigger points that lit up as you drove past them and selecting them was as easy as tapping a button. Some triggers slowed the action down, letting you carefully select which event you wanted. There were also two types of events: offensive ones where you used the environments to knock out an opponent (having a crane drop a shipping container on them, for example) and track-alteration events where you create shortcuts and new routes on the fly to get an advantage.
