Bayonetta: Fatal Footwear E3 Preview

Is it awesomely horrible or horribly awesome?

When I first saw gameplay footage of Bayonetta, I laughed out loud. It looked so ridiculous that I immediately grew skeptical. It was hard to take the game seriously because it seemed like one big joke. But after getting a demo of the game at E3, I'm starting to wonder if the joke's on me.

He who laughs last...

The first thing you notice about Bayonetta is how completely over the top it is. Its sort of like playing a video game that was based on the ramblings of a sugar obsessed eight year old. "And then, she flies up into the air and she has this sword and she slices the bad guy and then she shoots him and then this building explodes and it's like 'Kaboom!'"

But I'm starting to suspect that that's exactly the sort of vibe that the developers were going for. They push things so far into the realm of the nonsensical that it somehow makes sense. The visual style, the outrageous main character-she's wearing, in case you haven't heard, clothes made out of her own hair-and the ridiculously cartoonish action all combine to create not an action game but an action spoof.

In an e3 full of sequals this is the one game that caught my attention.

Explosive speed & over the top concepts... I'm looking forward to it.
