LittleBigPlanet PSP E3 2009 impressions

"Play, Create, Share" hits the PSP and Sackboy is just like his bigger brother on the PS3.

LittleBigPlanet was a curious beast on the PlayStation 3. It was adorable, but it was smart; it looked simple, but was deceptively complex. Its simple 2D platformer gameplay, reminiscent of Mario but with an increased emphasis on hanging and swinging, makes a good fit for a mobile game. LittleBigPlanet makes a great argument for upgrading to the PSP Go's 16GB internal storage, giving you more room to create and store custom levels and minigames. If you think about it, LittleBigPlanet may be more relevant in a mobile gaming environment than on a console, especially since you can download the free levels straight to your PSP or PSP Go via Wifi.

Much like Gran Turismo for the PSP, LittleBigPlanet is designed to be virtually indistinguishable from its console bigger brother (with some small compromises to visual detail and controls). The game looks terrific, and Sackboy runs and hops with his trademark fluidity. You can tell game objects are built with fewer polygons -- Sackboy looks a little pointy -- but that will enable users to create the biggest, most complex levels possible on the PSP hardware. So far, though, the game seems to strike a good balance.

The final game will include an all-new Story mode, new costumes and objects, as well as the ability to create and share levels via Wifi. Sackboy's ability to emote has been simplified given the lack of a motion sensor on the PSP; he can still make faces, but the more complex gesticulations are replaced by simple, cute little animations you can trigger. So far, so good: LittleBigPlanet looks at home on the PSP.
