Gran Turismo PSP E3 2009 impressions

Sid goes hands-on with the PSP Go's launch racer Gran Turismo, and learns that Polyphonal Digital refuses to compromise even in the handheld genre.

As an admirer, but not a follower, of the Gran Turismo series, I'm not exactly the best person to report on its many nuances and intricacies. That said, I understand the appeal of the venerable racing series, and of its dedication to realistic racing, realistic cars, realistic...well, everything. From the track designs to the car models to the feel of the handling, Gran Turismo has always been the leader in realistic racing simulation.

Handheld Horsepower

Gran Turismo on the PSP looks to recreate this experience exactly. Despite being a handheld title, Gran Turismo (that's its formal name, simply "Gran Turismo") isn't skimping on the content. The final game, due out on October 1st alongside the PSP Go, will contain 800 cars and allow players to trade to trade them with friends via Wifi. Pretty slick, and apparently necessary -- you'll need to trade if you want to eventually collect 'em all.

I played Gran Turismo on a PSP Go, and the bright widescreen display showed off the game's visual prowess. Running at a sleek 60 frames per second -- the holy framerate for precision racers -- Gran Turismo cruises along like a guided missile. Visually, I'd place Gran Turismo on the PSP very close to Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2. It looks crisp and colorful, with bold racetrack backdrops and a cinematic look. It doesn't look as insane as GT5: Prologue on the PS3, but it's terrific all the same.

Give me a fucking brake! It looks like a PS1 game! Can't believe you guys are eating this tripe.

Alvin: You clearly have NO IDEA what the hell you're talking about.

A) It's give me a "break," not brake. Ironically, you're thinking of a car brake

B) But here's the REAL POINT of my post:

I think everyone is forgetting that this is a blown up shot of a fast moving game in action. You're bound to see some flaws. I'll bet it looks awesome in action.
