Tekken 6 (PS3) E3 2009 impressions

The Next Battle: Scenario

Finally, I had a few minutes to play with the new Scenario mode. It's a cooperative mode (I assume online co-op, but that's unconfirmed) that enables one or two players to team up against hordes of ninjas, robots, and soldiers. If you've ever played the Tekken Force mode from Tekken 4 or Tekken 3, you'll have a good starting point for Scenario. But Scenario is on a much bigger and deeper scale. Scenario rewards repeat playthroughs with RPG-like ability upgrades, bonus gold, and new character costumes. The environments are large and visually detailed, and controlling your brawler through the corridors and rooms is pretty intuitive. Much like a Final Fight or a Streets of Rage, you can smash into crates and trashcans to reveal weapons. I saw a baseball bat and used a flamethrower and minigun to mow down crowds of enemy fighters. More bizarre was the second Scenario level, where I played as a humongous robotic tank (Nancy-MI847J, the secret boss from Tekken 6 arcade) and could fire rockets, lasers, and guns at the crowds in addition to mauling them with my four huge legs. It was weird, but oddly fun. I hope they mix up the later levels with other bizarre characters.

Tekken Sexy Back

Overall, I was pleased. The core one-on-one gameplay is tighter and more exciting than ever, and Scenario adds more long-term playable through its RPG-style character upgrades. In this way, Tekken 6 is creeping a bit closer to Soul Calibur IV's concept, but it's a good fit. On a side note, one of my E3 2009 regrets was not seeing the new PSP Tekken game that's due to arrive alongside the console versions (it wasn't at the show, though Soul Calibur was). I think highly of Tekken 5 on the PSP, and this new PSP game will follow the gameplay style of Tekken 6 -- a promising sign. Looks like 2009 is the Year of Tekken.

Two days up and not a single comment on this game? Everyone must be talking about Project Natal and how you'll never be able to play games like this with it.

Great write-up Sid.
The Labior is excited more so for the streets-of-rage-esque Tekken, looks seriously brutal.
