DJ Hero Xbox 360 Preview: Two Turntables
- June 02, 2009 00:00 AM PST
Activision brings a new genre of music game to the masses.
Remember that feeling you got the first time you saw or played Guitar Hero? Or Rock Band? That feeling that you were observing an entirely new way to experience music and video games? You're going to be experiencing that feeling once again very soon, thanks to DJ Hero.
Here's the DJ Hero turntable controller. The platter is detachable so you can place it on the left or right.
I'm the DJ, he's the gamer
The centerpiece of the DJ Hero experience is the turntable controller, which beckons to your touch just as much as a plastic guitar while only looking half as dorky. It consists of a record platter with three buttons. The platter can be shifted up and down to match cues, while the buttons are to be pressed down when the on-screen note chart signifies, much like you would in Guitar Hero. On the opposite side, there is a crossfader switch that allows you to shift between songs (more on that in a bit), an effects dial that works like Guitar Hero's whammy bar and adds rhythmic noises like zaps, bullet shots, horns, and sirens to your mix, and the Euphoria button works like Star Power, giving you a multiplier when you're consistently hitting notes. The back of the opposite site houses a compartment that hides the face buttons and a d-pad for menu navigation. The layout may be a little more imposing than Guitar Hero was, but fortunately, you can start on an easier mode that only requires you match the button presses.

It's so funny cause I love Rock Band & Guitar Hero but I don't play any instruments. However, I've been DJing for 8 years and I'm not the least bit excited about this. Now I know how John Mayer feels about Guitar Hero, lol.

They say that you can't create your own scratching effects. The game Scratch: The Ultimate DJ will allow you to. I think both will rock. I am going to get them both and keep the better one.
