Developed by Lucasarts Singapore and Krome Studios, the teams behind the recent Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels and the promising Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Republic Heroes puts you in control of Jedi or Clone Trooper squads as they take on perilous missions ripped right from the storyline of the TV show. The core plot is simple: Jedi and Clones battle the Separatists and defend the Republic, just like on the TV series.
"We've worked very closely with Dave Filoni and the Clone Wars crew to ensure that every detail of the game stayed true to the show's quality," says Cristopher "Soup" Lee, a producer at LucasArts (not to be confused with the actor who played Count Dooku).
Bane Rising
In addition to Cad Bane, a ruthless bounty hunter introduced in the final episode of season one, new characters will be introduced as well: "Kul Teska, a Skakoan of questionable integrity, is a villain that we created specifically for Republic Heroes," Soup adds. Additionally, all of the series' voice talents are lending their acting chops, and the 40's-style war reports, so pivotal in framing the tone of the Clone Wars, will appear in the game to quickly get players up to speed.
"It wouldn't be Star Wars if the Jedi couldn't deflect blaster fire with their lightsabers!" exclaims Soup. " Another new addition allows gamers who choose a Jedi to jump onto any droid in the game, jam his lightsaber into it, and control it as if it were a toy. "Droids with laser weapons effectively become your own portable shooting platform, while larger droids are almost unstoppable tanks," Lee adds.
The team hasn't neglected the clones, which you'll now be able to control in a dedicated storyline. The Clones' rapid-fire methods will be replicated by an option to control their blaster aim with the right analog stick, a la classic dual-stick shooters Smash TV and Geometry Wars.
The Theatrics of War
Cooperative play is seeing a major emphasis as well. "The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will support both local and online drop-in and drop-out co-op," Soup says. There's no online play for the PS2 or Wii versions, which will instead retain local co-op; the PSP will get local ad hoc co-op. Additionally, Instant Challenges will "appear throughout the game and offer a chance to take part in short competitive bouts while in the midst of co-op gameplay," Soup elaborates. "For example, one Instant Challenge has players competing to see how many droids they can beat in a set amount of time."
Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes will blast onto just about every console in the galaxy (Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, DS, Wii, PC) this fall.
